Longan Fruit

Longan fruit is not only very delicious but like Lychee Emperor and Lychee Hong Huay, Longan Fruit also has many health benefits. The Longan is part of the Lychee family and they both come from Asia. The fruit has a sweet taste and is often used for cooking. Also, our honey on this website is Longan honey, which in Asia is a very popular source for honey production. Besides the sweetness of the Longan, it is a good source of protein and dietary fiber.

In addition to its native homeland, you will find this evergreen tree grown in Thailand, Taiwan, India, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. It does need a change of seasons but without frost, which excludes the fully tropical climates. This makes Northern Thailand ideal for growing Longan.

To explain growing Longan a bit better:
Even trying to grow a longan tree in the Philippines – which is just a couple hundred miles south of Taiwan – doesn’t work. The constant warmth and lack of distinct seasons result in the tree not bearing fruit.

So what do Longan fruit look and taste like?

  • What does the Longan look like?
The flesh is translucent, and the seed is large and black with a circular white spot at the base. This gives the illusion of an eye. The flesh has a musky, sweet taste, which can be compared to the flavor of lychee fruit.
  • How to eat Longan fruit?
You can take a light bite on the fruit, just enough so the shell cracks open (almost in half). Then squeeze the fruit out of its shell. You can also choose to dig in your fingernail (or the tip of a vegetable knife) next to the stem and peel off the skin just like that.
  • Does Longan fruit make you gain weight?
On the contrary, Longan fruit is low calorie, low fat, and low carb counts make it a great substitution for sugar-rich (processed) foods in your diet that eventually may lead to weight gain.

The Benefits of Longan Fruit

Since not everyone is familiar with the great nutrients and benefits Longan fruit has to offer, you’ll find below a list with benefits.

Longan (Dimocarpus Longan) is a fruit grown in China, India, Thailand, and many other Asian countries. It belongs to the same family (soapberry) as fruits like lychee.
The longan fruit is used as in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a sleep aid, relaxant, to improve digestion, alleviate nerve pain, reduce fever, clean parasites, and even as an antidote to snake poison.

The fruit looks like an eyeball when peeled, which earned it the name “dragon’s eye” in Chinese. Longan fruit is said to help with many health issues but of course, more studies and scientific proof are necessary to make up as strong evidence.

According to that tradition, Longan is believed to:

  • benefits sleep and insomnia
  • reduce anxiety and promote tranquility
  • support the spleen and blood
  • improve the appearance of skin
  • help with rapid heartbeat
